Nutrition labelling requirement
The magazine “Il Corriere Vinicolo” writes about the Wineability solution
EU Regulation 2021/2117 – turning point in the wine sector.
2023 marks a turning point for the wine sector with the entry into force of EU Regulation 2021/2117, which introduces the obligation of nutritional labeling. In this context, digital emerges as a key tool, fulfilling obligations and at the same time promoting transparency towards the consumer. We anticipate the topics – which will be explored in depth during a meeting at Vinitaly on April 16 – with Carlo Carminati of SAIT focusing on Wineability, the advanced solution for wine traceability. Procrastination certainly does not help, extensions and exemptions are not eternal while fines for non-compliance can be significant. A few months after the introduction of the regulation, with the aim of clarifying, we answer the questions that many wineries are still asking themselves.
“What does the implementation of wine nutritional labelling require under EU law and by what deadline?”
“The regulation concerns wines produced from 8 December 2023 and requires that information on nutritional values – such as energy content, quantities of fats, carbohydrates, proteins and sugars per portion or per 100 ml – and ingredients be communicated to the consumer. This communication has a strategic value because it allows us to communicate with consumers with transparency and introduces new opportunities” explains the Sales Director of the Franciacorta software house. “In our case, Wineability provides a platform for wine traceability, allowing accurate management of information and simplifying the creation of compliant labels along with numerous other features.”
“How do consumers access nutritional information through Wineability?”
“It’s very easy! Consumers access it by scanning the special OR code on the label which takes them to web pages containing the information compiled by the producers.”
“How is the wine sector experiencing the digital transition?”
“It is understandable that in a sector characterized by small and medium-sized companies that make tradition a strong point, there is some resistance to the introduction of new technologies, for fear that they are too complex or that they will impact on procedures that are perhaps already problematic. Not to mention the reticence in getting to grips with the graphics of paper labels” continues Carminati. “Reassurance from us is therefore necessary. We have introduced traceability in many other sectors before arriving in the wine sector. The technologies we propose are sophisticated but easy to use for the user and are aimed precisely at filling a technological gap. To support their introduction, SAIT therefore places great attention on customer assistance and training. We understand the temptation of some producers to try to resolve the issue by adopting cheap and do-it-yourself solutions, but these involve risks. It is safer and more useful to rely on technology experts and use solutions that are already well-established and certain, both from a legal and operational point of view. For this reason, we have developed Wineability together with some wineries where it has already been in use for years (see the Mosnel case). Adopting it means making the company digitally evolve, enjoying benefits such as improved efficiency and a greater perceived value of the wine. So the solution is ready and available to be implemented starting today, it is called Wineability, and it arrives at Vinitaly 2024 with a special promotion: for those who request a quote during the fair, the functionality for regulatory compliance is free. Furthermore, since it falls within the Industry 4.0 tangible goods, companies that invest in it can benefit from the tax credit”.
